Terms of Service | The 8 Schools

By accessing or using The 8 Schools at www.the8schools.com ("the Service"), you agree to these Terms of Service. If you do not agree, please do not use the Service.

1. Description of Service

The 8 Schools provides online practice sections written in the style of the New York City Specialized High Schools Admissions Test (SHSAT). The 8 Schools is an independent practice resource and is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or connected to the New York City Department of Education.

2. Eligibility

You must be at least 13 years old to create an account. If you are under 13, a parent or guardian must create the account and agree to these terms on your behalf. Parents are responsible for ensuring their child's use complies with these terms.

3. Accounts

You are responsible for maintaining the confidentiality of your password.
You agree to provide accurate information when registering.
We reserve the right to suspend or terminate accounts that violate these terms.

4. Payments and Refund Policy

Full practice sections are sold as single-use credits in three bundle sizes: Single Section ($5), 10-Pack ($25), and Season Pass ($50, 30 sections). One credit is one full-length timed ELA or Math section. There are no subscriptions, no auto-renewals, and no recurring charges. Credits do not expire. Payments are processed by Stripe; we do not see or store your card details.

7-Day Prorated Refund

If you're not satisfied with your purchase, you can request a prorated refund within 7 days of purchase. We refund the unused portion based on the formula:

Refund = (Tests Remaining ÷ Tests Purchased) × Amount Paid

A test counts as started (and therefore "used" for refund purposes) once any answer is submitted on it — even if the test isn't finished. Diagnostic preview tests do not count.

Examples:

Single Section ($5) — not started: full $5 refund. Started: no refund.
10-Pack ($25) — used 2 of 10 sections: refund = (8 ÷ 10) × $25 = $20.00
Season Pass ($50) — used 6 of 30 sections: refund = (24 ÷ 30) × $50 = $40.00

How to request: Email support@the8schools.com from the email on your account within 7 days of purchase. We process refunds within 3 business days back to your original payment method.

After 7 days, all sales are final regardless of how many tests have been used.

If a technical error prevents you from completing a test you've started, email support@the8schools.com within 7 days and we'll issue a replacement credit.

5. Acceptable Use

You agree not to:

Copy, distribute, or resell any test questions or content from The 8 Schools
Use automated tools, bots, or scrapers on the Service
Attempt to reverse-engineer, hack, or disrupt the Service
Share your account credentials with others

6. Intellectual Property

All test questions, content, scoring logic, and design elements are the property of The 8 Schools. Questions are original works written to align with publicly available SHSAT formats. Unauthorized reproduction is prohibited.

7. Disclaimer of Warranties

The Service is provided "as is" without warranties of any kind. We do not guarantee that practice test scores will predict actual SHSAT results. Use of the Service is at your own risk.

8. Limitation of Liability

To the fullest extent permitted by law, The 8 Schools shall not be liable for any indirect, incidental, or consequential damages arising from your use of the Service. Our total liability for any claim shall not exceed the amount you paid us in the 12 months prior to the claim.

9. Changes to Terms

We may update these terms at any time. Continued use of the Service after changes constitutes acceptance of the new terms. We will update the "last updated" date above.

10. Governing Law

These terms are governed by the laws of the State of California, without regard to conflict of law provisions.
